WHAT IS THE JUBILEE YEAR?

The Jubilee Year, or Holy Year, is a significant Catholic event occurring every 25 years. It’s a period of spiritual renewal, forgiveness, and celebration. 2025 will be the next Jubilee Year in Rome and Vatican City, lasting from Christmas Eve, 2024 until the Epiphany festival in January 2026. In honor of the Holy Year 2025, millions of pilgrims will flock to Rome and other Italian holy sites to participate in this momentous occasion. For Catholics, the Jubilee holds deep spiritual meaning. It’s an opportunity for pilgrimage, reconciliation, spiritual growth, and celebration. If you’re planning on visiting for the Rome Jubilee 2025 or thinking of traveling to Italy in 2025, make sure you plan ahead with this handy guide.
VISITING ITALY DURING THE ROME 2025 JUBILEE

The Jubilee Year is a double-edged sword for tourists. On the one hand, the city of Rome, along with its various landmarks, will be presented in its most beautiful form. In preparation for this momentous event, 100s of public works and infrastructure projects have been in operation to ensure the city is presentable to visitors and operating efficiently. Moreover, visiting during this time offers a unique opportunity to experience Italy’s vibrant culture and history.
On the other hand, it leads to overcrowded attractions, inflated prices, and limited availability of accommodations and transportation. One can expect:
- Record-breaking crowds: Popular tourist spots will be packed beyond capacity. It’s estimated that Rome will welcome at least 35 million pilgrims from around the world.
- Soaring prices: Accommodation, flights, and even food will be significantly more expensive.
- Limited availability: Booking hotels, flights, and tours will be challenging, if not impossible, at the last minute. Make sure to book ahead if you plan to visit Rome during this time.

JUBILEE EVENTS 2025

Throughout the year, there will be many different events to honor the Jubilee, and it’s advisable to check these before selecting your travel dates. It all kicks off with the opening of the Holy Door at St Peter’s Basilica which marks the official beginning of the Jubilee. In the following days, the other three papal basilicas in Rome (St. John Lateran, Santa Maria Maggiore, and St. Paul Outside the Walls) will also open their Holy Doors until the end of the Jubilee. Walking through these doors is considered a symbolic transition from sin to grace and is believed to bring salvation to those who pass through.
The rest of the Jubilee is divided into numerous smaller ones which are each dedicated to a different group and theme and take place at different times. Note that most events and activities will take place in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and St. Peter’s Square. The official Rome Jubilee 2025 calendarprovides the entire list, but some of these include the Jubilee of Artists (15-18 Feb), Jubilee of the World of Volunteering (8-9 March), Jubilee of People with Disabilities (28-29 April), and Jubilee of Youth (28 July – 3 August). There are also numerous Jubilee Walks, which are the various Pilgrimages across the city.
